Probe launched into ‘murder’ of dalit youth

Attingal, Feb 03 Attingal police have launched a high-level probe into the death of a dalit youth, who was allegedly thrashed to death. Attingal DSP P Anilkumar took over the charge of the probe from Ayiroor police inspector on Saturday. Ananthu Mohan (24), a resident of Manthara near Kuzhakkadavu in Edava Village is the deceased. He was a daily-wage worker at a car showroom at Varkala.

According to officers with Ayiroor station, the incident took place on Tuesday around 11.45pm. He was allegedly beaten up by his neighbour Mohammed Abdulla alias Mammathulla accusing him of stealing petrol from the latter’s motorcycle. Mammathulla allegedly thrashed Ananthu with the handle of a shovel. He succumbed to injuries on Friday.

“According to neighbours, Mammathulla had been complaining of frequent fuel theft from his motorcycle during the past three months. On the day of the attack, Mammathulla was hiding behind bushes to catch the thief red-handed. When he saw Ananthu and a friend approaching the motorcycle, he pounced on them and started to thrash them,” said an officer.

Besides section 302 of IPC that pertains to murder, the police have also invoked sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Atrocities (Prevention) Act. tnn (Image: India TV)
