Kerala’s Congress leader Om George booked for sexually assaulting 17-year-old girl

Wayanad, Jan 30 A Congress leader from Kerala’s Wayanad, Om George, has been booked for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old tribal girl for nearly two years. The case was filed against the former panchayat president on the basis of the complaint filed against him by the minor girl, reports said. As per the police, the Congress leader had been allegedly sexually abusing the girl for at least one-and-a-half years.

Reports said that the girl and her family were working as servants at George’s house. Authorities were alerted about the incident after the girl allegedly tried to commit suicide last week. Following this, she narrated her ordeal to the parents who approached the police.

On Tuesday, cops filed a case under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO), Times Now reported.
Meanwhile, the police have also reportedly taken statements of the complainant and her family and were also probing the contents of the girl’s mobile phone which is said to have crucial information regarding the case.

On the other hand, the Congress leader has also been accused of trying to “settle” the case with the police. As per the latest reports, Om George, who hails from Sultan Bathery, was absconding.

In July last year, a woman worker of the Congress had accused her male colleagues of sexual misconduct at a seminar in Dharwad in Karnataka. While participating during the seminar titled ‘Chunavane: Ola-Horagu’ (Elections: Inside-Outside), senior party worker Anit Gunjal had levelled allegations against a Youth Congress leader of pressurising her for sexual favours in an inebriated condition.
