Dalit men thrashed for watching Ganpati procession

Two members of the Dalit community, residents of Madhavpura, suffered injuries in a fight with members of the Thakor community, in the Idgah area of the city on Sunday, during a procession headed for the immersion of a Ganesha idol.

According to the FIR registered at Madhavpura police station by Jigar Rathod, Dalit community members were watching a Ganpati procession on Sunday afternoon when the members of the Thakor community threatened them to “stay away from Ganpati’s gulal or it would get polluted”.

This spurred arguments between members of the two communities, which turned into stone pelting.

Police lodged a case under assault, criminal intimidation and atrocity charges against four members of the Thakor community.

“I was standing to watch the procession when members of the Thakor community started spraying gulal on people. When I asked why they were spraying gulal, some 15 to 17 members of the Thakor community rushed to me and threatened me, asking how I dared to stand in front of the procession despite being a Dalit,” stated Rathod, who is hospitalised in the trauma ward at Civil Hospital in Asarwa.

Later, members of the Thakor community allegedly started throwing stones at Rathod and other members of the Dalit community. In the attack, Rathod and another man, Mukesh Hadiyal, suffered injuries and were rushed to hospital.

Madhavpura police booked five persons, Ashok Rathod, Nayna Rathod, Manoj Rathod, Bhaliyo Rathod and Manoj Rathod, all residents of Madhavpura, for the attack on members of the Dalit community. The accused were also booked under the charges of SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Madhavpura PI V N Rabari said the accused persons are yet to be arrested.
