Feb 14, A day after Chotila police arrested headmaster of a school reportedly for raping a Dalit student, accused Batuk Bhatti was sent to two days in police remand.
According to case details, the 16-year-old Dalit student used a blade to slash her wrist multiple times in an attempt to kill herself on Tuesday after Bhatti allegedly raped her twice and molested her at every given opportunity. After a medico-legal case was filed following the girl’s attempted suicide, police booked Bhatti under under sections of rape and molestation of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), under section 5 and 6 of the POCSO Act and under multiple sections of the Atrocity Act.
The SC/ST Cell of Surendranagar police on Thursday said they sought three days’ remand of Bhatti, trustee and headmaster of Kamal Vidyamandir Sankul, but the local court granted two days.
DySP (SC/ST Cell) S J Pawar said, “We are currently interrogating Bhatti regarding the multiple incidents of rape described by the victim.” Police expect the medical test reports of the 16-year-old to arrive within next two days.
Meanwhile, Officials from the DEO’s office have procured a copy of the FIR to investigate how the school and hostel was run. The school is currently closed. After the horrific incident came to light, it led all parents to take their wards back home. Even the staff has left the premises. However, DySP Pawar said that statements of school staff would be taken as soon as possible.
The police are also looking to speak to parents of other children and students themselves to check whether any of them had similar experiences at school.
